- Wasn't he wearing his insulin pump?
Yes he was. Insulin was the problem because he had too much insulin in his system, causing his sugar to go low. He was in need of something to eat to raise his sugar back up, not more insulin.
- You need to send more snacks with him.
Jeff carries a large red lunchbox to and from work. It is filled with gatorade type drinks, snacks of all kinds. Ask anyone he works with, it is a hit with all of them, because they snack out of it as well. He is never short on snacks, we make sure of that.
- Why didn't he eat something?
Jeff's sugar crashed fast! Within minutes he had gotten low enough to not remember anything, which is NOT normal or something he has ever experienced. He was not in the right frame of mind to know that his sugar had gone low so quick. He is usually really good about recognizing symptoms and correcting the problem right away. If he had known his sugar was low, he would have eaten a bunch of stuff and not gotten in the car to drive. It was a fluke thing and something we pray never happens again!
- Doesn't he know when he is going low?
Yes he does. And more often than not, he catches it and corrects it quickly. Especially when he is at work. This was a rare occasion, one in all of the 12 years I have known him, I have never seen happen like this. He's been low plenty of times, but never to this extreme or where he was that 'out of it'.
- Will he still be able to work?
We were blessed that the highway patrol did not ticket Jeff for the accident or put anything medical on his record. We really didn't want to have to jump through hoops to have him able to drive. So yes, he is able to work and has promised me he will try and keep a better eye on his sugar :)
Jeff is in the process of working with his doctor to hopefully get a CGMS covered by insurance. This is a device that will alarm if his sugar is going high or low. Something he could definitely use and we hope and pray the insurance covers it!
We SO appreciate all of your thoughts, prayers and concern...It means a LOT! Thank you all so much!! Diabetes is a confusing thing, so hopefully this helps. :)
