Early this morning, around 1:30 am I was woken up to our bed shaking, we had only gone to bed at about 11 pm so not too long afterwards. As I rolled over I see Jeff laying there on his back, holding his head and shaking uncontrollably. He was staring straight at the ceiling, I could not get him to make eye contact. He was sweating and just not with it! So I head down stairs to get some candy and some juice, things I have used to pull him out of low sugar before. So I first try with the candy, but he won't chew it, so I switch to the juice with a medicine dropper, and I manage to get him to take a whole cup full. But still nothing, which usually by now he is at least acknowledging me. So I go and turn on the lights, when I notice he has thrown up all over, and by this time he has shut his eyes and I can't get him to open them. I can't get him to do anything, he is just laying there! So I realize at this point I need to call 911, something I have never had to do before, something I never want to have to do again! So I call my parents, because if they transport him to the hospital I will need someone to be here with my kids. As soon as I heard my Mom's voice I broke down, she lets me know they are heading out and to call 911 and call her back. So I get off the phone with her and dial 911 :( I get them on the phone and explain to them what is going on. The guy on the phone tells me that I need to unlock my front door, and turn on lights and then head back up to be with Jeff. He also tells me to roll him on his side, since he has thrown up just in case it happens again. And that I need to get myself ready in case they need to transport him to the hospital. So I get myself dressed, and I attempt to put pajama pants on Jeff, I got them up about half way and then he started to kick. So I had to leave them. I called my Mom back, and we were able to say a prayer together on the phone, and I talked to her until the paramedics arrived, and then my parents arrived shortly after. In walk 2 guys, followed shortly by 2 more guys, followed by another guy and a girl (a little overwhelming). As they come into the room I explain what has happened, what our history has been like with low sugars, and answer a bunch of questions. I just stood by the wall, to stay out of their way! They start to basically yell Jeff's name, and try to see if they can get a response......nothing! So they proceed to test his blood sugar, it took them a while to get any blood out of his finger, in fact one guy had to squeeze the heck out of his finger to get anything. When they did get it tested, he was only at 21, which to give you an idea of how low he was his normal range is anywhere from 70 to 100 on a good day. And he got a 21 after I had already given him a cup of juice, so who knows what he had been at when I woke up. They proceed to try and get a response from him, and start an IV. At this point Jeff still doesn't open his eyes, but he starts to fight the paramedics! Because he was fighting them it took 4 guys to get the IV in, one holding his left arm and his legs (so he wouldn't kick them), another to hold his right arm still (so they could get the IV in), another to stick the needle in and get the IV started, and one to hold the IV bag and inject something into the IV (basically sugar type stuff). Shortly after they proceed to talk very loudly, and call Jeff's name again. He opened his eyes for a second and then wouldn't again, but he did start to pull up his pajama pants. Which we all laughed and they said 'well that is a good sign'! They proceed to call his name some more and finally he acknowledges them. They ask him if this has ever happened before and he told them no, which isn't true, it happened while he was on his mission! Then they asked him if he knew where he was, he said no. So they waited for a minute or two and then proceeded to ask him again if he knew where he was, again he said no. So the paramedic said 'want to give it a try' by then he was looking around and said 'my room', so they asked him the year and he said '09'. He started to be more responsive and while looking around he was surrounded by paramedics, so he asked where I was. They told him I was there, and asked if he wanted to see me, he said yes so I walked around and he just stared at me and said 'this is bad'. I was just so happy to see him awake and responding! They ask him if he wants to go to the hospital, and he says no. So they tell him they need him to sit up, when he does he realizes that he has thrown up and wanted to go shower. So they tell him they need him to show them he is okay enough to take care of himself, and they wanted him to eat a sandwich or something (Thanks Mom for heading down and making one for him!!!!). So he does and starts to be more responsive and apologizes for all of this. The paramedics fill out some paperwork, hang aroudn for bit, and then pack up their bags, and gave us a form to say that he does not want to go to the hospital that we had to sign. And then they leave! I was SO glad that they didn't have to take him to the hospital, that we were able to pull him out of this just at home! My Mom and I pulled the sheets off, and then my Mom and my Dad put some new ones on! There is blood all over them, from them trying to put the IV, but what can you do?!! So we do that, I get him a new shirt for him to change into until he can shower. Then my Dad and my brother Nate (who my parents called to have him meet them at our house) gave Jeff a blessing. I am so grateful for the priesthood!!!!! After that, we talked for a bit and then they left as well. I helped Jeff get clothes and things and he took a shower. By this time it is after 3:00 am and I am wide awake! Once he is done we climb back into bed and talk for a while longer about everything that happened. It was probably 4:00 am before Jeff even started to fall asleep, I was having a hard time falling asleep and just kept praying that I could! Finally I did, and got a couple hours in before Grant was waking me up at 6:30 this morning :) I am so grateful for the paramedics who were able to pull him out of this and help us out! I am so grateful to my parents for driving across town to be with me, and my brother, Nate, for waking up and coming over. It means so much to me, and to Jeff that you would do that for us! I love you guys!!! I am grateful that even with everything going on and how loud it got NONE of the kids woke up! Which is so surprising for all of them but was such a blessing!!! They definitely did not need to see all of those paramedics there, and see their Dad like that! I hope and pray this never happens again!! And I am so thankful that he is okay, and that the paramedics could get it under control!! Count your blessings :)
